On Saturday May 23, 2009 members of the Philipsburg Amateur Radio Association
provided communications assistance at the 29th Annual Black Moshannon Park -
YMCA 10K and 5K race. The race was held in Black Moshannon State Park and
benefited the Moshannon Valley YMCA in Philipsburg. Race sponsors included
Lee Industries, M&T Bank, CNB Bank, Rapid Transit Sportswear, For the Birds
and Black Moshannon Lodge.
Amateur radio communications for the race were organized by Dick Thompson K3BIE.
Assisting Dick were PARA members Rich KB3QKR, Mark K3ITG, Bernie W3BAR and John
N3SPW. Also assisting was Chuck K3CM from the Nittany Amateur Radio Club based
in State College. Amateur radio operators were stationed at strategic locations
around the race course and relayed the elapsed race time to runners as they
passed by. Amateur radio operators were able to report back to race officials
as the last runner passed each check point. The only reported injury was a case
of heat exhaustion at the finish line which was handled by the Moshannon Valley
EMS staff on scene.
